A recognisable character, driver or artist may attract attention, but the garment underneath determines whether fan merch is worn once or for years. Good merchandise should satisfy two standards at the same time: it must respect the visual reference and perform like a well-made piece of clothing.
1. Start with the fabric
Fabric weight is commonly measured in GSM. Lightweight cotton can feel airy, while heavyweight cotton—often around 220 to 240 GSM in streetwear—creates a more structured fall. Higher GSM is not automatically better; the knit, softness and breathability also matter. The fabric should feel smooth enough to carry a detailed print and comfortable enough for repeated wear.
Hold the garment up to light, feel the surface and check whether it returns to shape after a gentle stretch. A strong base makes every other element perform better.
2. Inspect the print
Look closely at edges, small text and colour transitions. Fine details should remain readable. Large solid areas should have even coverage. The print should be aligned with the garment rather than tilted or placed too close to a seam.
Different techniques create different effects. Screen and digital prints can deliver colour and detail. Puff adds dimension. Embroidery introduces texture. Reflective material responds to direct light and flash. The technique should suit the artwork rather than being used only as a marketing term.
3. Understand the intended fit
A regular-fit tee should sit close to the natural shoulder and fall cleanly through the body. A slim fit narrows more noticeably. A true oversized fit is designed with extra width, a deliberate drop shoulder and longer sleeves—not simply scaled up in every direction. Check the size chart instead of relying only on the letter printed on the label.
4. Check construction
- The collar should lie flat and recover after stretching.
- Side seams should be straight and balanced.
- Stitches should be consistent without loose threads.
- Hems should not twist after the first wash.
- Labels should not scratch or irritate the neck.
5. Think about the tenth wear
Ask how the piece will look after washing, commuting and regular use. Follow care instructions, turn printed garments inside out and avoid harsh ironing directly over artwork. A garment that improves your wardrobe is more valuable than one that only looks exciting in a product photo.
